This may seem trivial to some, but for me, it was an accomplishment.
I have never really traveled alone. It’s not one of my favorite things to do. But when you are forced to do it, you do it.
I have an aunt who’s health is failing. I needed to be with that part of my family for support and to say goodbye, to my aunt, while there was still time.
I could have flown or taken the train, but money is still tight, so I drove. It’s a 4.5 hour drive, but I did it…alone!!! This is huge for me. The farthest I have driven by myself was 2 hours last year. I even had to go over one of the major bridges in New York City, which for anyone, is stressful.
The back story on my travel experiences, specifically driving, goes back to when I was driving age, 16, I was scared to drive, because I was in a couple of accidents, as a passenger. I didn’t think that I could make the right decision if I was in an accident as a driver. So I never drove until I was 21 years old.
But again, in life, I was forced to do it, so I did it. But driving on highways really scared me and getting lost terrified me. This was back in the 80’s when there was no GPS yet.
Then in the early 2000’s, I was in FL, for a business trip, and I was in a rental car with a GPS. Well, it changed my life! No more possibility for getting lost!!
GPS’s were $800 then but I got one. And a new girl was born! I would go anywhere! It was liberating.
But still, after all these years, I never drove far by myself since I was with someone for so long. Now that I am on my own, I am trying new things and learning what I am capable of and I am very proud of myself.
The little things!
What have you done that you are proud of?
