I broke my knee

I’m almost 60 years old and I have never broken a bone before. Well, I am sure that I have broken a toe, but there is nothing you can do for that. I guess I was due.

Writing helped me get through my last traumatic experience, when my ex left me, back in 2014. So I thought writing would help me again.

I was working at a bridal show, for my full time job, and during the set up of our booth, I tripped on a rug, that had buckled, and I went flying forward, like I was sliding into home plate.

My knee hit the cement floor hard!

I went to the ER and my knee cap is broken 1/2 way…luckily not all of the way, or I would have had surgery right away. The hospital gave me a knee brace, a prescription for Oxy, and a walker. We thought it would be easier for me than crutches.

When Dave and I got home, he had to lift me up 1 step into the entry of my house and another step from the entry into the rest of my single story house. I definitely couldn’t do it myself. I learned quickly that using a walker requires upper body strength, which I am lacking.

Dave took the 1st day off to help figure out everything I would need when I am home alone.

I work from home, but my office is on the same level as the entry, so I needed help to get down there the next morning, I could sit in my desk chair, with my leg propped up, and work at my desk. But after working the first day, I realized that I couldn’t get out of my office on my own. I decided to move my computer, and everything else to do my job, into the living room. My desk chair has wheels, so now I could get from the living room to the kitchen and bathroom on my own. We put the walker in the bathroom so I can stand at the sink to brush my teeth and clean up.

The next issue was to figure out was how to take a shower. I have a walk-in shower with sliding glass doors. Dave got me a shower chair from goodwill. Now, how do I get in the shower?

The base with the door tracks is 3 inches high. I couldn’t hop over with my good leg so I decided to push the shower chair close to the front of the shower and go in backwards and sit down on the chair. Dave had to get in the shower, behind the chair and he pulled me into the middle of the shower. I was good to go from there. I have taken 1 shower so far and can’t wait my next one.

I will meet with a orthopedic surgeon on Monday, so we will see what the next course of action is.

This accident has really put a damper on all of my short term plans and my 2 side businesses. I am unable to watch dogs, work on my art and probably travel home, to see my family, later this month. I was also planning to go to Canada in July, to see more family, but not sure if I will be able to go there as well.

I shut my Etsy store down temporarily, since I cant pull the items ordered, package them up, and ship them. I cant go to the 2 stores, that sell my items and replenish my stock.

UGH!!!!

One additional thing that I have been experiencing is that my emotions are all over the place. I can cry at the snap of a finger. I am angry, sad, and scared. It’s only been 6 days since the accident, so this is just the beginning. I am sure this is just the initial reaction to this situation, and the pain, it will just take time.

Has anyone else broken their knee and do you have any advise?

Updates will follow.

  1. Awwww, Lady. So sorry to hear about your mishap. It is going to slow you down but I know you’ll figure out how to get things done. I’m recovering from a dislocated right shoulder last September and have become very left-handed. Your age is on your side and having a one story house is a blessing when we get beat up. Keep smiling and writing. The other solutions will come along. Just hope the pain isn’t too bad. Will keep you in my thoughts. Hoping for the best in the situation, Carol
